Signature quilts or friendship quilts, which they were called earlier in history, around 1840 to 1860. Many of these quilts were made to keep loved ones or friends close. The materials used were sometimes from a garment that that person might have worn, along with a solid white or muslin piece of fabric with a signature.
At wartime this became a treasured keepsake for the people that would not be coming home. Money would also be raised for the military or veterans, by people purchasing a signature square to be sewn into a raffled off quilt.

Newer quilt styles became friendship or signature quilts. Which can be used for weddings, baby showers, retirement parties, and team sports signatures, just to mention a few. I would like to take it a step farther, say an animal sanctuary quilt, anniversary
quilts, and I'm sure that if pushed there are many more ideas out there.
